PMOSIG Finds a New Home at the APM

The PMOSIG - the independent specialist interest group focused on programme and project office has been around for 10 years and now they have just moved to become the Association for Project Management’s 13th specialist interest group (hopefully that number will buck the trend and prove to be a lucky one for the PMOSIG)

The APM Board approved the introduction of the PMOSIG as APM’s 13th specific interest group at their meeting on 12th of July. I’ve been involved as a committee member of the PMOSIG since 2002 – I manage the marketing activities for the group and its been a great experience as well as meeting some great people along the way who have become good friends. Over the last 10 years we’ve been putting on conferences for other PMO people to come along and meet others who work within the same role – the conferences (we hope!) have given much food for thought as we tried to stay ahead of the curve with subject topics. At the end of 2010, as a committee, we looked back at where we’ve come from and took some time out to work out where we’re going to go next. Don’t let anyone tell you that working in a voluntary capacity is easy – it’s not – you’ve got to be committed, passionate about what you’re doing, holding down the day job effectively whilst marshalling others into action. We felt it was time to start thinking differently about the PMOSIG – about what we wanted to achieve for the industry (and our members) and we’ve got some great ideas and plans to put into action. This is where the APM came in – we felt that the group had reached a stage of maturity where they needed to be involved with a large organisation to help us to achieve our goals. After some consideration APM was to be this organisation. After a comprehensive governance process that involved gaining the approval of existing APM SIGs and the SIG Steering Group, a recommendation for adopting the SIG was put to the APM Board.

APM announced that discussions had begun for a proposal for an APM PMOSIG back in April, where PMOSIG Committee Chairman Chris Walters outlined the key benefits of merging with APM in a PMOSIG newsletter.

So here we are; we’ve arrived at the Welcome mat at the door of the APM and we’re really excited about what happens when we peek inside! There’s still much to do as we move from an independent SIG and if you’re interested you can get involved too. If you’re already an APM member and not heard of the PMOSIG before we can be contacted by emailing pmosig@apm.org.uk or by joining the SIG via our website, which will be migrated across to The Groups on APM’s community page later this year. Specific Interest Groups discuss particular aspects of project management to further understanding and good practice. The PMOSIG is open to anyone employed or interested in the management and support of portfolios, programmes and projects in any industry. You can also be involved with the PMOSIG and attend events without being a member of the APM too.

September 2011 Event

We’ve already announced our  inaugural event as an APM SIG, which is entitled The Business of PMO – Tuning the PMO to drive business benefits, which is a unique opportunity to gain understanding and practical knowledge on the real business of PMOs – bridging the gap between projects and business. The conference kicks off on the evening of the 14th September at the Hilton Hotel, Watford with round table discussions led by volunteer members on tried and tested tools and techniques, plus an opportunity to combine learning and networking over dinner with your fellow PMO professionals. Sessions include: resource management, using sharepoint and project prioritisation. The second day includes the brilliant and experienced PMO expert Mark Price Perry – a full day of PMO practical knowledge to be gained! The conference concludes at 5pm on the 15th of September. Visit the event’s page for further details of the conference.
